9TH ANNUAL WOMEN’S CAPTIAL CLASSIC – HUGE SUCCESS!
NEW CALCULATER PAYS OFF – NO FLORIDA RECOUNT NEEDED
PITTSBURGH CHINSTRAPS STAGE EPIC COME BACK
It was a great weekend for women’s ice hockey, as The Gardens Ice House hosted the 9th Annual Women’s Capital Classic on June 6-7-8, featuring 12 teams from four states plus Washington, DC, with players coming in from as far away as Florida and Massachusetts. The weather was beautiful all three days, leading to a large ‘hang out’ period between the two sets of games on Saturday, which featured many new friendships being made, music (live and recorded), grills cooking hamburgers and hotdogs, and plenty of liquid refreshments. Some were calling it “Occupy The Gardens”.
Another big hit was the food at the Ice Breakers Café, as chef Marlin once again offered his Create-A-Crepe’s as a specialty to the women of the tournament. Players were signing in as late a 10pm Friday night and asking if we were offering Crepes again this year. Early Sunday morning, some players were giving their unused café tickets to John Scavilla, as part of his ‘Save the starving Director’ campaign, but upon learning the Crepes were about to be served… they asked for their tickets back…
Rec Division Championship Game ReCap:
The game featured the first place Annapolis Anarchy, consisting of players from Navy against the Pittsburgh Chinstraps… who included no one actually from Pittsburgh, more like anyone within five degrees of separation, including one player whose second cousin twice removed had a Great Aunt who once received a post card from someone in Pittsburgh. The game was very evenly played, but late in the third Anarchy was in control with a 3-0 lead. However, the hockey gods shone on the Chinstraps, who scored three goals in the final 1:49, to tie the game and send it into a shoot-out, which they won to claim victory. Anarchy captain Liane Zivitski said “We’re coming back next year to win and claim our 100% cotton t-shirts!”.

Middle Division Championship Game ReCap (that’s ReCap, not ReCount):
Last year there was quite a debacle, when the Lucky Pucks of Florida, who thought they had won the Middle division, not only got bumped out of first place, but were bumped out of the championship game, due to a calculation error, so this year they decided to send in a calculator with their deposit. Team Captains Danielle Faries commented “No more ‘Florida Recounts’, we’re coming back this year to earn the shot at the championship we deserved last year.” The Lucky Pucks indeed finished first and played Jenn & Tonic in the Championship game. Jenn & Tonic have put a team in the tournament each of the nine years, and are no strangers to the big dance, but the day belonged to the ladies from Florida, who have promised to come back next year, moving to the Upper Division. Special thanks to Carrie David and the ladies of CBL Rec, who agreed to move up to the Middle Division for this tournament.

Upper Division Championship Game ReCap:
The Upper Division Round Robin featured some incredible hockey games this year. Special thanks to Madde Whitney and her Steel City Sirens for agreeing to move to the Upper Division. The Orange Crush finished first and were the class of the division in more ways than one. After winning over the Rooftop Rebels in the Championship game, the final game of the tournament, Orange Crush Captain Amy Reich asked Rebels Captain Stephanie Ciulla to get both teams together for a group photo. And that’s how the tournament came to a close, with the combatants at the highest level coming together to show respect for each other and the greatest sport in the world, ice hockey.
Orange Crush:
