Chivalry is not dead
I had the honor an privilege of playing goalie last night for one of the ice hockey teams in the women’s division I manage. Team Orange. My goal was to be having the most fun of everyone on the ice….. it is always about the experience, and the game was a blast. I try not to take goal-tending too seriously, as let’s face it, there are no scouts in the stands. Back in the day, I did get to play in front of scouts once. It was a group of Cub Scouts on a field trip….. I usually don’t mention that part. On the Team Orange humanitarian side of life… somehow, after the game Abbe needed a pair of shoes. (As a guy, I have learned not to ask too many questions.) I loaned Abbe my tennis shoes, because I had another pair in the car. After playing a second game, the challenge became actually getting to my car with no shoes on. I did not put my socks on as they’d have gotten soaking wet. So I walked from the back rink to the front door in bare feet, carrying all the goalie gear. Let me tell you… that floor is freaking cold… everywhere. As fate would have it, I was parked about as far from the front doors as is possible. So, I went into the office and checked the lost and found to borrow any kind of foot covering… no shoes, but there was a pair of hockey socks… slid them over my feet, folded them over once and voila! Think “Valley Forge Soldier 1776.” (see attached pic). Next was shuffling past the group of guys I know, who were drinking out front, without them noticing me or thinking a homeless guy had been in the rink rummaging through locker rooms. Happily, the trek to the car went without incident.
How funny! and neat that you mention the Valley Forge Soldiers. When my feet are cold and wet that is the first thing that comes to mind!
